midlife crisis doesn't always come cheap. More than one person has put an
expensive sports car in the driveway about halfway through the ordeal, only to
find that the buyer's-remorse aftermath then creates a whole new set of crises.
That's why getting your fix by simply renting a fantasy car might be the hot
ticket. Beyond that, if you're thinking about plunking down close to — or more
than — six figures to own or lease a particular vehicle, test-driving outside of
the dealership may be a better alternative to getting stuck with a $2,500
monthly payment, only to discover your legs cramp after an hour. (For more about

want to drive a conversation piece.

A couple things to keep in mind: Most of the rental rates listed here are for
Monday through Thursday, and usually there are pretty tight mileage limits — 100

A few years ago, it was nearly
impossible to rent a hybrid gas-electric car. That's
beginning to change.

In case you haven’t looked at a
newspaper, magazine or television show in the last year, the
American business world is currently caught up in a game of
environmental one-upmanship. The big car rental companies
have joined the competition—and rental customers seeking
greener alternatives will eventually be the winners.

Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Hertz, and
Avis-Budget have all recently added a few thousand hybrids
to their fleets. By the end of the year, Enterprise—the
world’s largest automobile fleet in the world with nearly
700,000 vehicles—will have ordered about 4,500 Priuses.
Hertz is aiming to have 3,500 hybrids in their fleet by the
end of 2008, and Avis-Budget is not far behind, having just
announced the purchase of 1,000 Priuses and 500 Nissan
Altima Hybrids.

“That’s a drop in the bucket,” said
Chris Brown, editor of Auto Rental News, a publication which
monitors the car rental industry. Certainly, converting 1
percent of available rental cars to hybrids will have little
effect on global climate change, but it’s one more small
sign that going green and efficient is becoming a business
imperative. “Let’s face it. The customer is driving this
cart. Nobody wants to rent SUVs anymore,” said Brown. “The
car rental companies have no choice, so they’re becoming
proactive.”

would face a number of logistical challenges. Toyota, the

Washington, D.C. location as an “E85/Flexfuel branch,”
where half the vehicles can use E85. Unfortunately, there is
only one filling station in the Washington area that sells
E85—about three miles from the E85/Flexfuel branch.
Enterprise uses E85 to refuel vehicles rented at this
location.

The more telling statistic for the
rental companies is the average fuel efficiency of their
entire fleets. In that regard, the race looks like a dead
heat, with all the major car companies reporting that nearly
half of their vehicles have fuel efficiency ratings of 28
mpg or higher—a figure which is almost identical to the
average fuel economy of all new cars. The tie for greenest
car rental agency may be broken by the company’s broader
environmental programs. For example, Enterprise is
underwriting the planting of 50 million trees, or 1 million
trees a year over the next 50 years in national forests

The furniture was part of my deceased father's estate and I had no idea how I was going to get it to my home. Your company was Fantastic! When I moved 3 years ago, I used another company and it was a disaster. I even had one of the movers drop a chair on my feet.....no, I'm not kidding. I was just glad he wasn't standing on the Street when he did so. The 3 gentlemen that moved me were wonderful! They put everything where I wanted it and they were such a pleasure to work with. They had me loaded up w/in about an hour and were just as quick getting me unloaded. They were very friendly and courteous and my 11 year old daughter was exchanging recipes with one of the fellas. Very nice crew you have working for you! The office staff was fabulous! I changed the items I was going to move like 4 times and each time they sent me a revised quote. The day before the move the office called just to make sure I didn't have any questions. I've never had a moving company do that before. Just a real pleasure to work with. I moved last month in the same building, from one floor to another. I read the reviews on this site and called Cheap Moving Company New York at 1-800-311-9850. They gave me an estimate on the phone after asking a few questions about what I had in the house. I signed the contract and that was it. On the day of the move, there was some kind of miscommunication within the company and they had me scheduled for the following day. I could not do it as I had taken off from work that day. The manager and part owner worked something up, pulled more guys from another job and was able to accomodate me on that same day. The guys showed up, after having planned to be done for that day. They were as pleasant as can be. They worked very hard, always with a smile and completed the job to the last item. They were exteremely efficient, and did an amazing job. I highly recommend these guys, they are the best. Extremely professional.

When you move to New York City, as I did six years ago, people tell you about the high price of real estate, parking and martinis. No one ever mentions rental cars.
How expensive is it?

In the past, I’ve thrown down more than $100 a day for a Chevy Aveo (or similar). I’ve investigated renting at Newark Airport ( Image Rent A Car Newark Airport NJ ), which is more than 50 percent cheaper. With train fare, it’s a tossup, but that’s before you factor in the extra time. And all of that depends on availability in the first place.

Forget about impromptu beach trips or last-minute jaunts up the Hudson Valley. For most summer weekends, you have to book at least a week in advance. For holidays, you’ll have to do much better than that.

Just yesterday I checked out Avis (my agency of choice; I have a Wizard number and everything) to rent a car for the weekend of June 1 to 3. For an intermediate car (Pontiac G6 or similar), the fee was $272.97. Add the Loss Damage Waiver at $9/day and taxes, and the bill came to $336.48, more than airfare to Los Angeles.

What about the “week rental” strategy? For the same car from June 1 to 6, the bill came to $419.13. I checked Orbitz.com, and the best deal was with Budget at $321.67. Ouch.
I understand that real estate prices factor into the elevated rates in New York City — and I’m mainly talking about Manhattan — but I’ve rented a convertible in Miami for under three bills.
John Barrow, an Avis spokesman, explained that in addition to real estate costs, “fees and licenses, the price of labor — everything you think about Midtown that’s expensive. It’s difficult to expand the garages. We can either optimize our space or find a new space. It’s the typical dynamics of running a business in Midtown Manhattan. I wouldn’t say that it’s unique to the rental car industry.”

He said that Avis was constantly adjusting the supply within the city, bringing in cars from J.F.K. and LaGuardia airports. “We leverage our fleet across the area,” he said. “It’s a constant process of making sure that your supply is being moved around to support demand.”
Christy Conrad, assistant vice president of public relations at Enterprise, said that supply has a direct impact on the price. “In general, cars are dropped off in Manhattan on Sunday,” she said. “So for Mondays, Tuesday and Wednesday, the deals are in Manhattan. On other days, it’s the reverse. In the areas surrounding Manhattan, we’ll run 50 percent off deals Friday through Monday.”
Ms. Conrad and Mr. Barrow said it’s better to book far in advance. I told him that I’ve done that, only to see the price come down as I approached my rental date. “It can depend on what your channel is,” he said, referring to the various travel Web sites. “Generally speaking, we’re adjusting to a competitive landscape. If a competitor has changed its price, then we adjust.”
One thing Avis hasn’t adjusted to is Zipcar, which seems to be doing pretty well with its hourly rental scheme. Avis doesn’t plan to launch hourly rentals soon, but others have. Hertz began hourly rentals in April. And Ms. Conrad told me that Enterprise is extending hourly rentals to every branch in Manhattan this weekend. For me, it might be too little too late.

My Zipcar membership card arrived in the mail today. Daily rental prices seem to be similar to the big guys, but I feel like I’m getting more for my money: free gas, free insurance, cooler cars (including Mini Coopers, BMWs and Scions) a clever irreverential tone in all of its literature that makes me feel like it’s run by people who play Guitar Hero all day. Rentals Cars in New York and New Jersey come equipped with EZPass transponders; most even have XM Satellite Radio. The Zipcar Web site is even — gasp — Flash-enabled.

So that’s my summer. I’m going to see if Zipcar has really stumbled onto a shiny new model for an old business or if it’s all smoke and mirrors. Or maybe I’m just asking too much out of a rental car company in Manhattan.

2. Your moving estimates has to be written, if you booked amove over the phone request a email with all the move info that was discussed over the phone, do not trust any movers who will schedule and book your move without written proofs.

3. An hourly rate quote move should include all wrapping material (blankets, bubble wrap, tape...) regarding delicate furniture such as mirrors,glass tables, dressers... at no extra charge. Unless upon customer's request to do separate and individual packing (linen, dishes...) in advance prior the day of the move.

4. Visit our section about your rights, read it very carefully, then your move is 100% right, prepare your move ahead, if you have small items very fragile move it in your car yourself or very valuable items that can be move in your car or your family van, move it yourself.

5. Always if you choose an hourly rate, the law requires that movers have to let know the customer a total probable cost, it should be written in your order of service.

6. If you choose a binding price make sure to include in your inventory list, what will happen if elevator is out of order or street are being closed or any other inconvenience.

New York City Movers - Manhattan Moving Company

Keep moving boxes to 50 lbs or less. Put heavy items in small boxes and light items in big boxes.
Pack non-breakables tightly in smaller boxes, so they’re not too heavy to move
Buy clean newsprint to wrap items, and bubble wrap for padding.
Pack breakables loosely in plastic storage bins with lots of bubble wrap.
Rent furniture pads.
Mark your boxes by room, so you know exactly where everything goes. Color coding or using a number system works great (i.e., red stickers for bedroom or 1 for bathroom.)

Being a college student I was looking for the cheapest movers I could find, but I wasn’t expecting the service to be all that great, but I was definitely wrong! I was able to get a great price and get great service. The crew was friendly, and took care of my things as if it was their own, with the utmost care, and the move really was hassle-free on my part! They didn’t even say anything when I changed my mind 5 billion times!! I felt bad, but they reassured me that they were here to do what I wanted to make me satisfied with what they would accomplish. I would definitely use these guys again when I move!

At the drop off, they repeatedly offered to put the items in any area of our residence and offered to set everything up. Mike and James did an excellent job. I had a Terrible move about 3 1/2 years ago with lots of damage and missing items. I was really worried that this would be the same. I found that your company had the fewest complaints of the ten or so movers that I looked up online. The move went great! Mike and James were on time and very friendly. They were efficient and careful. I had no damage, and everything was placed where I asked. I have already been telling my friends and co-workers what a wonderful job you all did. The staff at the office was incredibly nice. I really liked being able to change online my list of things to move. The updated quote was very helpful. This is the second time I've used new York Movers - Moving Company and have been pleased both times. I had the same guys, Mike and Sam , both times. They were actually the ones that moved my sister because I had recommended this company to her, as well. The timeframe I was given was 2-4 pm and they arrived promptly at 2 pm and we're finished by 4:30pm. They put everything where I wanted it to go and were efficient and timely. Here at CPA , we list your company on our website that is available to parents for moving and storage. Two great points - you accept small jobs and take credit cards. You didnt send an eval for Evelyn in the office - she was extremely helpful and kind - great customer service which is one of our main focus points here in the VP's office. I can't say enough New York Movers - Moving Company and his band of movers. We were their third move on a rainy Saturday night and these guys were amazing. They worked like horses and pretty much made jokes and laughed the whole time. A few things broke, but I don't think I packed those things well enough. I have never used movers before and working with Sam was a pleasurable experience. Earlier on the day of the move, Sam gave me a call to let me know that they were a little behind. It didn't matter to me much and when it came time to pay the bill, they knocked off a hefty sum to compensate for the delay. I moved mid April 2007 and first off, he was the only moving company who personally came and gave an estimate (how can you tell how much it will cost if you don't see for yourself?). That really impressed me. He came in and gave me a fair quote and estimate. Let me tell you I had a lot to move! 3 Bedrooms, basement, backyard, full Kitchen, dining room and family room. The guys came in over 2 days and moved everything without a hitch. Even stayed late the first nite getting it done. Very Happy Customer. New York Movers - Moving Company is responsible, and his guys are trustworthy. Nothing went missing or damaged and they show up on time. 1 week after the move I had a sofa delivered and the delivery company wouldn't bring it into my house. (They left it on the sidewalk!) I called Mike and he came couple of hours later and he and his mate moved it into my sunroom. And he didn't want to charge me anything!!!! I left a nice tip and highly recommend this company and his crew. Thanks Mike! You are the bomb!

New York Movers - Moving Company = Remarkable Movers made my move such an easy one - Erica was great, taking care of all of my co-op's rules and requirements, She Faxed The Insurance Certificate To The Co-op's Office and the movers were the absolute best. Mike was my foreman, he and his crew were timely, friendly and professional. Nothing was a problem, from helping us pack up the last of our boxes, to assembling all of my furniture, They were an absolute pleasure dealling with Them . They were so careful with all of our things that I wound up having them move paintings I had planned on taking myself, because I thought they'd get it there more safely than i would, and they did. Everything got to our destination undamaged. Nothing was misplaced or broken, and I never heard them say that they couldn't take something or that it didn't fit. They got to my new home and started unloading quickly and efficiently. They were always on the move, no one was ever standing around doing nothing or moving slow. They stayed until everything was where we wanted it, and the price was great, even though I underestimated the number of boxes we had by a lot. All in all, they made moving stress free. I would highly recommend them.

I thought since I read about the company on this site and then ended up using them, that it would be nice to let you all know about my move to New Jersey. I saw the reveiw for New York Movers - Moving Company a week or so ago and thought I`d give them a try. I have to say, I`m glad I did. They were so nice and helpful. They walked me through it just like the person said in the review and made it so easy for me. It took a couple minutes of my time to fill out the inventory list they make you fill out, but this is only so they can get you a real price. Not a quote like all the other companies do. and that was the price i paid. no hidden costs, no hassles. I recommened them to anyone considering a move. thanks guys.

This crew of five moved us from our apartment in Manhattan to anotther apartment 30 blocks away. They broke nothing, they moved us quickly, and they re-wrapped many of my self-packed boxes that didn`t look strong enough to them, without charging us. They took every shelf off the wall, disassembled our beds, including my kids` bunks, and reassembled them in our new apartment. They took stuff to our storage area. The owner, Eric , even advised me on how to pack my china and other breakables, once he realized we were doing the packing ourselves. He and his team of men were nice, respectful , honest guys, and he gave us a binding estimate that did not change. We highly recommend New York Movers - Moving Company and their owner for anybody who is skittish about moving. This company was a relief to find.

I was referred to New York Movers - Moving Company by a friend of mine who works for the company. I received an estimate from Eric (the owner of the company) for 6 hours including travel time. My job came to 7 hours but you should have seen those guys work (I am a musician so I had lots of equipment) the guys were friendly and actually seemed happy moving all my large, heavy boxes. I had a crew of 5 men and I definitely need them with all our stuff my wife alone had most of the truck with her clothes and shoes we also have 2 girls with just as much stuff as there mother. New York Movers - Moving Company was great and I will recommend them to everyone that I know. The least that I can do for these guys and this company is provide an excellent rating. Remarkable moving is by far the best moving company i dealt with. i move very often for work and i hate the whole process. my experience with flatrate moving was very different. i paid a little more than i usually do but i got the service i deserve. everyone in this company are super professional, the movers,the office staff,the dispatcher and the drivers. i recieve my goods in time as promised and in the same condition i sent them. I strongly recommend to use them. after all, you get what you pay for.

We had a wonderful experience with the crew from New York Movers Services for our in-state move. A company representative gave us a free estimate and box delivery was free as well. They even bought back our unused boxes. Actual cost was within about 10% of the estimate, plus the charge for boxes of course. On the day of the move, the crew showed up right on time, introduced themselves, and got to work. They were very professional and communicative throughout the day. They worked very hard all day to get our move done. We appreciated their courtesy as well: we were addressed as "sir" or "maam" and they always said "excuse me" - very polite guys! I would highly recommend this moving company if you are moving in New York City. So my overall word on New York Movers is GREAT !

If you need to move around the NYC area, you got to use the Mike. My move was only within the SF city and I heard they were fast and reliable movers, so I gave them a try. They were right. 5 men came over to move my 3 bedroom, two bath condominium, packed and moved everything to my new house in just one day. Three years ago, the new york movers-moving company guys came and helped me out - they were so fast and careful! They made moving so easy - and it was very cheap. This year I moved again, and without reservation called the guys. From the initial call to the confirmation, everything went so beautifully. The moving guys called me the day of my move, about an hour before they arrived. It literally took 40 minutes to move an entire one-bedroom apt into the truck. The team I had was very quiet, light on their feet (did I get the dancers this time?). When we got there, it took longer because we had to deal with an elevator and spiral staircase. I was a little worried, but again, I don't know how they do it - they are what they say, "very gentle". And extremely quiet. It ended up taking two hours. I recommend these guys - and don't forget to tip well. they're artists!

After calling several companies for estimates for our move from new York to the Bronx , we chose New york Movers , Moving company not only for the good feedback we had read, but also because there was a simple 'pay by the hour' fee schedule that included no extra and/or hidden costs. We were very pleased with our choice. They not only arrived on time - but a little early. All four men were friendly, highly professional efficient and skilled at moving large pieces safely around tight corners. Also, my husband was happy that he and a neighbor were allowed to help, which made the entire move go ever faster, thus making it cheaper. The rate was very competitive, and Isaac who took care of me from beginning to end was right on the mark with the volume evaluation and with the cost. The movers did a great job. We moved several times using different companies and I have to admit, they did a great job. If anyone wants to move, I highly recommend New York Movers Movers for the relocation but make sure that you speak to Isaac Perez who was by our side with any question we had a round the clock, no matter how simple or complicated the question we had. If he did not have an immediate answer, ge researched, used his connections and in no time we had a professional advice for no extra cost. Now that`s service!!!! and also if you live in Manhattan, go there, they have nice an impressive showroom..it will give you an idea of what to expect with quality of materials and hands on experience. This crew of five moved us from our apartment in Manhattan to anotther apartment 30 blocks away. They broke nothing, they moved us quickly, and they re-wrapped many of my self-packed boxes that didn`t look strong enough to them, without charging us. They took every shelf off the wall, disassembled our beds, including my kids` bunks, and reassembled them in our new apartment. They took stuff to our storage area. The owner, Vincent Sam, even advised me on how to pack my china and other breakables, once he realized we were doing the packing ourselves. He and his team of men were nice, respectful , honest guys, and he gave us a binding estimate that did not change. We highly recommend New York Movers Movers and their owner for anybody who is skittish about moving. This company was a relief to find.

I thought since I read about the company on this site and then ended up using them, that it would be nice to let you all know about my move to CA. I saw the reveiw for New York Movers Movers a week or so ago and thought I`d give them a try. I have to say, I`m glad I did. They were so nice and helpful. They walked me through it just like the person said in the review and made it so easy for me. It took a couple minutes of my time to fill out the inventory list they make you fill out, but this is only so they can get you a real price. Not a quote like all the other companies do. and that was the price i paid. no hidden costs, no hassles. I recommened them to anyone considering a move. thanks guys.

This was not the first time I moved in the USA but definitely the first time the moving was perfectly smooth! I was expecting delays, excuses, broken items, overcharges like any other time I had to use movers but this time I found none. The movers were right on time, friendly and professional, did not rash with my furniture and made sure everything was packed and stored in the most secure way possible. Everything got to my new apartment on time and in the exact same condition as they left my old one! After reading all the good reviews from other sites on New York Movers Movers, I decided to give them my business. That, and getting quotes form Moishes and OZ. These two wanted $3700 and $2700 respectively. New York Movers said $750!!! I figured in about another $700 in boxes, moving help, etc and came up with a max of $1450. This was a no brainer. In any event, hope this wasn't too long. I will without a doubt use New York Movers Movers again. Packing yourself is not fun, but if you've got time, you will save a lot. This is my first post, but I thought this site saved me so much, I had to at least try to help someone else decide

Moving, as we all know is VERY stressfull...and I can honestly say, I might just be the queen of stress. Not so, with these guys, they calmed me down (not easy in any circumstances), and proceeded to move me and my apartment. I have to say that they did everything, down to taking down the door to my apartment and the front door of the building, after trying every single angle to get the sofa out known to man, and a few unknown ones! WOW! they were fabulous...all I have to say is: if you're moving...USE THESE GUYS...THEY ARE THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OH, AND BY THE WAY...THEY KEPT TO THE QUOTE TO THE PENNY.

I had a great experience with New York Movers Movers from beginning to end. The salesperson I was communicating with was very helpful, and was patient with me even with all of my questions (I had a TERRIBLE move with another company a few months earlier when moving my things into storage). On the day of the move, things went smoothly.. everyone was professional, hardworking, efficient. They actually wrapped my furniture, unlike the "full service movers" that i used to move into storage. I didn't have any hidden charges, either... I was told up front when getting my estimate what my extra charges were - the boxes i used from their truck and if i wanted extra insurance. The one "negative" thing, if you can call it that, is that my actual charge was a bit higher that what I was quoted. I'm not terribly upset, though, because the person i spoke to did tell me that the quote allotted for some minor traffic delays... but choosing to move on a Friday, I suppose, actually ends up with major traffic delays. That's just the way things are and is not really anyone's fault. I still recommend them to my friends and family.

Got quotes from other "top" moving companies and their rates were double. New York Movers is professional, reliable and great to work with. THis is the first time I got movers and I was annoyed at how expensive some of the other quotes were. Thankfully I relied on the reviews posted here and called up for a quote. It was affordable and stress-free. They were flexible with the amount of boxes I expected to have and they were polite at all times. The movers arrived on time, did their job and left without incident. They worked hard and never came across as threatening or sketchy. I never write reviews but I felt this company deserved the praise. I highly recommend New York Movers Movers . "
